Part of the relics which started being collected in 1949, after the establishment of the “Society of the Hellenic Maritime Museum”, for the preservation and promotion of the Greek tradition and heritage consisted of shipbuilding plans and mechanical ship plans. These plans were considered to have not only a scientific but also a historical value for researchers, historians, shipwrights, mechanical engineers as well as Officers of the Navy and the Merchant Marine. Today, the Museum’s archives include more than 3000 sheets of shipbuilding plans classified in 205 files covering the period from the end of the 19th century till the 20th century. The most recent plans which came to the Museum’s possession are of the functional copy of the Athenian trireme of the 5th century, the famous ”Olymbias” which was built by the Hellenic Navy in 1986. These plans, due to their volume and their special nature, have not been included in the Museum’s permanent exhibits. Below is an indicative list of some historical ships of the Hellenic Navy as well as indicative types of merchant ships which belong to Greek ship-owners and whose plans are part of the Museum collection:
