The Hellenic Maritime Museum and the Aikaterini Laskaridi Foundation present to the public an exhibition dedicated to the foremost 19th century Greek seascape artist, Constantinos Volanakis. The exhibition has brought together approximately 60 oil-paintings from public and private collections in Greece and abroad. It is the first time that such a wide ranging Volanakis exhibition is shown in Greece.

A few words for the painter
Constantinos Volanakis (1837 Herakleio - 1907 Piraeus) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Karl von Piloty. He won the first prize in the competition for the depiction of the naval battle of Lissa, announced by the Austrian government. His work was presented at the Artistic Exhibition of Vienna and was purchased by the Emperor Franz Joseph. He continued his international career by taking part in the exhibitions of the Artistic Society of Munich while in 1877 he exhibited the Naval Battle of Trafalgar in London, and the work was immediately purchased by the British Admiralty. In 1883 he returned to Greece and was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts where he taught Elementary Graphics and Statue Drawing. At the same time he taught at the "Artistic Center", a painting school he had founded in Piraeus, where he had settled upon his return from Munich. Continuing his exhibition activity, he participated in many international and domestic exhibitions. In 1883 he presented the Naval Battle of Salamis at the Greek Court and in 1889 was awarded the Silver Cross of the Savior. Volanakis developed into one of the most important Greek seascape painters and one of the foremost representatives of the Munich School. His compositions, lyrical and atmospheric depict his relationship to the sea but also raise awareness of the social aspects of his time, items that are deeply rooted values of Greek modern culture.
