The map archive consists of approximately 700 maps by renowned cartographers ( G. Mercator, V.M.Coronelli, P.Cluverius,J.W.Laurenberg etc.) of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century.
Since the museum’s establishment, several maps have been donated by services and friends. For instance, the Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service, which was established in 1919, has donated two large book bound collections.
In 1991 and 1992 the Hellenic Maritime Museum bought a great part of its map collection from famous art galleries inside Greece and abroad.
The collection was enriched in 1998 with an important donation of 220 maps and etchings belonging to the family of the late Admiral Demetrios Papalexopoulos. The maps of the archive of the Hellenic Maritime Museum have been classified according to the geographical region that they chart. More specifically, they have been divided in the following categories:
-

The maps have been registered, photographed and filed.
