The exhibition ends with the presentation of traditional shipbuilding and the sailing vessels which roamed around the Mediterranean and the Black Sea during the 19th and 20th centuries. Models of peramas, trechantiria, symian skafi, gatzao, trata, karavoskaro, santala, bombarda-polaque and varkalas are only some of the known hull types which were built by Greek shipwrights on the islands and coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean.
At the same time, the diorama of a tarsanas (shipyard of the 19th century) presents, in a didactic and comprehensible manner, the building process of a trechantiri and the traditional shipbuilding techniques which are still used for wooden vessels.
The Greek traditional vessels and their riggings are the last link of a long technical and cultural heritage. The technological changes which happen today in shipbuilding and navigation have rendered it necessary to record and study this aspect of Greek tradition. The reason is that in a few years this whole tradition will find its way to history.
It is worth mentioning that the exhibition includes a model of the Kaiki of Inepoli, which is a town on the coast of the Black Sea. This particular hull holds a special position in the history of shipbuilding, since it is the only surviving instance of the ancient shipbuilding technique called “shell first”.
The central exhibit in this hall is the large model of a trechantiri which bears shipbuilding details and has been constructed by one of the last traditional shipwrights working in Perama, Pahos Papastefanou.
In the same area, in a glass wall cabinet the visitor can see a small but complete collection of nautical instruments dating back to the 17th up to the middle of the 20th century.
