European Days of Cultural Heritage
“Common Greek Residences and the Floating Residencies of the HMM”
September 2007

The theme “familiar stories”, which was selected by Greece for the years 2007 and 2008, gave us the opportunity to reexamine our collections this time looking for floating residences instead of floating means of transportation. We discovered new stories together with our young or adult visitors; stories of the palafitos, houses in Chile standing on poles over the sea as well as stories of the ocean liners and the yacht “Christina”, Onassis’ famous floating residence.

“Sea Routes”

The Hellenic Maritime Museum, as part of its participation in the European programme “Network of Associations and Museums for the protection of the Cultural heritage of the Mediterranean”, hosted the international temporary exhibition “Sea Routes” from 18th to 30th July 2007.
A multidimensional recast of the history of the Mediterranean (in terms of geology, history, archaeology, folklore and finance) was attempted with the help of modern technology and virtual reality.
A total of 65 Mediterranean museums participated in the exhibition with items such as archaeological findings, valuable miniature works made of corals, ancient shipwreck representations, ship models, etc. The objective was to show the link connecting all the peoples and the great civilizations which were born and which developed in the arms of the Mediterranean.  It also aimed at taking visitors on a trip in the waves of the Mediterranean history.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the Deputy Minister Anastasios Nerantzis.
