HMM CHRISTMAS BAZAAR
2/12/2007-5/1/2008

The 2nd December 2006 was the opening date of the Christmas bazaar of the Maritime Museum. A special event was organized and the bazaar remained open until the end of the Christmas period. Visitors had the opportunity to find HMM publications, small presents and office equipment at low prices.

Presentation of the HMM Calendar 2007
Hellenic Merchant Marine. The Fourth Service
HMM Reception Hall, 22/11/2006

The 22nd November 2006 was the date of the presentation of the Museum’s special calendar edition for 2007 which took place in the HMM Reception Hall. The calendar’s title is “Hellenic Merchant Marine. The Fourth Service”.

The calendar was mainly based on the photographic and archive material of the Hellenic Maritime Museum. It presents the contribution of the Greek merchant marine to the struggle for the liberation and the establishment of democracy in the European countries. Moreover, it shows the self-sacrifice of our seamen which remains unknown to the general public and unacknowledged by social conscience.

The calendar was presented by Ioannis Paloubis, Vice Admiral of the Hellenic Navy in retirement. The Vice Admiral along with the ship-owner Panos Laskaridis wrote the texts in the calendar. The event was greeted by the Minister of the Aegean Sea, A. Pavlidis and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine, I. Tzoannos.

HMM participation in the exhibition “Aristotelis Onasis: Beyond the legend”
Benaki Museum, Piraeus Str Building

The exhibition “Aristotelis Onasis: Beyond the legend” was held by the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in cooperation with the Benaki Museum.
The aim of this exhibition was to retell the story and reinterpret the legend around the man. It also presents the ways in which his wish has developed through the activities of the  Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.

A large part of the exhibition comprised of objects belonging to the Onassis collection of  the Hellenic Maritime Museum. The paintings, etchings, nautical instruments, bone ship models and works of modeling art reveal unknown traits of this Greek entrepreneur and great collector.

 

Presentation of the HMM “Balkan Wars. The Naval Struggle. 1912-1913”
Velidis Conference Centre
Thessalonica 15/5/2006

On 15th May 2006 the presentation of the historical album “Balkan Wars. The Naval Struggle. 1912-1913” took place in the Velidis Conference Centre in Thessaloniki. The Mayor of Thessalonica, Vasilis Papageorgopoulos and the Minister’s representative, Georgios Kalantzis, greeted the exhibition. The book was presented by its author Ioannis Paloubis, Vice Admiral of the Hellenic Navy in retirement.

  The event was held under the auspice of the Municipality of Thessalonica.



From large to small scale shipbuilding
Exhibition of traditional hulls as part of the Maritime Week 2006

The purpose of the exhibition was to present the most characteristic types of traditional Greek ships, which have now become extinct due to the complete prevalence of motor ships. The exhibition also included photographic material on maritime life in the Greek islands at the beginning of the century. In addition, an info kiosk provided the visitor access to informational material on traditional shipbuilding and on the types of vessels and riggings found in the shipyards (tarsanades) and ports of the Eastern Mediterranean in the 18th and 19th century.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the Minister of National Defence, Evaggelos Meimarakis.

 

Welcoming ceremony for the functional copy of the historical Spanish shipNao Victoria”.
Zea Harbour, 23/3/2006

The HMM, the Spanish Embassy and the Cervantes Institute of Athens welcomed, on 23rd March 2006, the functional copy of the historical Spanish  ship N a o V i c t o r i a, one of the five ships of Magellan which completed the first sail around the world in 1519.

The functional copy of the impressive ship was built in 1992 as part of the International EXPO Trade Fair of Seville. In 2004 she undertook the revival of the adventurous voyage of 1519 with a crew of 20 young volunteer yachtsmen. Piraeus was the last stop prior to the ship’s return to Seville where she completed the course of Magellan.
