HMM CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

On Saturday, 17 December 2005, a Christmas bazaar was held by the Hellenic Maritime Museum in its exhibition hall. Visitors had the opportunity to make their last buys before Christmas in the form of useful or decorative objects, books, paintings and other presents.

The exhibition included more than 300 exhibits from the shipwreck whereas visitors had the opportunity to see part of the hull of the legendary ship which was drawn up from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

With the cooperation of the Maritime Museum, a special area was prepared in the exhibition which was dedicated to the torpedoing against the light cruiser “Elli”, an incident which has left a mark on the war history of Greece. “Elli” was sunk by an Italian submarine on 15th August 1940 outside the port of Tinos.

 

European Days of Cultural Heritage
“Savoury Voyages”

From 13 to 30 September 2005 an exhibition titled “Savoury Voyages” was held at the Hellenic Maritime Museum as part of the European event “Culture on the table-Several approaches to history and diet”.

During the exhibition educational programmes were carried out on the dietary habits on board the vessels of the old times. Moreover, educational programmes on trade were implemented in cooperation with the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage.

 

 

Presentation of the historical album  Balkan Wars. 1912-1913. The Naval Struggle”

On the 25th May 2005 the presentation of the historical album edition “Balkan Wars. 1912-1913. The Naval Struggle” took place by means of an impressive event at Zappeion Megaron .
This historical album presents the actions of the Hellenic Navy during the Balkan Wars through unpublished photos and documents. The objective of this edition is to show the general public the contribution of naval operations to the final outcome of wars and at the same time to shed light on the unknown aspect of everyday life on board war ships and requisited merchant ships of that time. The album publication was based exclusively on the museum’s invaluable photographic and archive material.

The Minister of National Defence Spilios P. Spiliotopoulos, the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Anna Benaki-Psarouda and the Chief of the National Defence General Staff, Navy Admiral Panagiotis Hinofotis all said a few words about the book. The edition was presented by the publisher Panagiotis Spiropoulos and the book’s author Ioannis Paloubis, Vice Admiral in retirement.

The event was held under the aegis of the Ministry of National Defence.

 

Painting exhibition by HMM Members “Sea, Inspiration, creation....”

The exhibition consisted of works by HMM members, namely both professional painters and amateur artists. The key point of inspiration was the sea. The exhibition included paintings (oil paintings as well as mixed techniques), diamonds etchings on crystal, works of wood sculpting and other three-dimensional works.

 

Participation of the HMM in the exhibition for the “170 years of Modern Piraeus (1835- 2005). Snapshots from the life and history of the city”.

The exhibition, held by the Municipality of Piraeus for the 170 years from its establishment, included snapshots from the life and history of the city. These were presented through a plethora of exhibits, gravures, maps, photos, archive material and museum exhibits.  The HMM participated by lending some photographic material and ship models.
